President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, during the latter’s state visit to the Maldives, on Friday, witnessed the exchange of several key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements aimed at boosting cooperation between the two countries across diverse sectors.
Held at the President's Office, the ceremony saw the launch of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement and the signing of a USD 565 million Umbrella Line of Credit agreement between the Maldives and the Export-Import Bank of India. Other agreements covered collaboration in fisheries, meteorology, healthcare, digital transformation, and cross-border remittances.
The two leaders also jointly officiated the virtual inauguration of major development projects. These included the ceremonial handover of 72 vehicles from India to the Maldivian Ministry of Defence and the symbolic transfer of 4,000 housing units funded under India’s Buyer’s Credit facility — of which 700 units had been handed over during President Muizzu’s visit to India in October 2024.
A highlight of the event was the virtual launch of the Addu Roads Project, a key infrastructure initiative financed through India’s Line of Credit, expected to significantly enhance connectivity in Addu City.
Reinforcing support for local communities, the leaders also inaugurated six High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs), funded by Indian grant assistance. These include outdoor gyms in S. Hithadhoo and GDh. Vaadhoo, a youth centre in GA. Gemanafushi, a volleyball court in Sh. Kanditheemu, and a small-scale fish processing plant in S. Hithadhoo.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit comes as part of the Maldives' 60th Independence Day celebrations and reflects the growing strategic partnership and enduring friendship between the Maldives and India.
