Baarashu MP Ibrahim Shujau has rejected criticism by MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail over the government's proposed amendments to the Decentralization Act, saying the bill is intended to empower the people and strengthen local governance.

Fayyaz had earlier expressed concern on social media, claiming the bill seeks to take away decision-making powers from councils and centralize authority. He warned that the amendments would undermine the decentralization system and force councils to become dependent on the central government. He also stressed that councils should have financial independence to function effectively.

Responding to the remarks, Shujau said the proposed changes aim to resolve longstanding issues in the decentralization system. He accused the opposition of misleading the public and added that genuine improvements can only be made through responsible engagement and practical suggestions.

Shujau further criticized Fayyaz and the MDP for avoiding accountability in addressing decentralization issues, stating that the government remains committed to empowering councils and local communities.
