The government eyeglass shop at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has so far issued 131 free eyeglasses, with 1,267 people currently in the queue, according to hospital officials.

The MCGH Opticals, was launched under the Aasandha scheme as part of a government initiative to provide affordable eye care and curb illegal profiteering in the optical business. The initiative was announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in May this year.

Located at IGMH, the shop issues around 20 to 30 glasses daily, with an average of 45 people undergoing eye examinations each day. IGMH CEO Ibrahim Haleem said the facility is equipped to offer full services, including number-taking and lens production. The shop is also equipped with machines to check for cataracts and eye pressure, enabling early detection of conditions like glaucoma.

A second outlet is expected to open at Hulhumalé Hospital later this August as part of the expansion plan.

Additionally, the government has revised the Aasandha coverage for eyeglasses, increasing the subsidy from MVR 1,000 to MVR 2,000.
