Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem has said the state has not received over MVR 15 billion in taxes, describing it as a serious injustice to the people.
Saleem made the remarks during Wednesday’s parliamentary debate on amendments to the Administrative Taxation Act. He said while the country’s tax system was introduced with a noble purpose, the failure of some to regularly pay taxes is making it difficult for the state to function effectively.
He emphasized the importance of establishing a strong system to hold tax evaders accountable. Saleem, who is also a businessman, said he too should face consequences if he fails to fulfil his tax obligations.
Saleem added that compared to many other countries, the Maldives does not have a high tax rate, and called for legal action against those who deliberately avoid paying taxes.
