Former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom has accused the government of preparing to “buy” the upcoming local council elections by raising MVR 400 million.

Speaking at a rally at the People’s National Front (PNF) office, Yameen alleged that the government cannot win through public support and is instead seeking massive funds to influence voters. He claimed the ruling party is in a “honeymoon period” but lacks genuine backing due to what he called “ill-advised policies.”

Yameen argued that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) does not have such financial resources, but warned that an additional MVR 400 million would make it difficult for them to compete fairly.

He also criticized the government’s confidence in securing 80 percent of the vote, suggesting such claims are unrealistic and would be undermined if voters knew about the alleged cash distributions.

The government has not responded to Yameen’s remarks.
