Former Attorney General and lawyer Al-Ustazah Aishath Azima Shakoor has said that a police officer who claimed he never took the oath of office should also be charged with fraud.

Her remarks came after Sajid Ahmed, a policeman arrested in Thinadoo over allegations of importing and dealing in e-cigarettes, told the High Court that he did not take the oath when appointed as a special constable.

Police searched Sajid’s home under a court order and recovered evidence related to e-cigarettes and suspected drugs. However, the Thinadoo Magistrate Court ruled the order invalid and released him, a decision now under appeal.

During the appeal hearing, Sajid said he had attended the swearing-in ceremony but deliberately refrained from taking the oath, despite serving for a month and a half and receiving a salary.

Azima argued that even without verbally reciting the oath, signing it would constitute taking it. She noted that Sajid had worked in uniform, performed official duties, and received pay, which she said warrants an additional charge of fraud.
