Parliament today passed a bill mandating the establishment of water and sewerage services in all inhabited islands across the Maldives by the end of 2027.

Previously, the law required these systems to be installed by August 2024. The new amendment, introduced by Dhidhdhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed, extends the deadline to the end of 2027 to ensure all inhabited islands have adequate water and sewerage services.

The bill was passed with 61 votes in favor, while members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) voted against it.

Under the amended law, arrangements for the installation and operation of water and sewerage systems must be made in consultation with relevant authorities. The bill also introduces fines of up to MVR 1 million for misuse of water and sewerage systems and up to MVR 100,000 for contamination of groundwater.

The government aims to complete this nationwide initiative by the new 2027 deadline to improve public health and living standards.
