Former STO Managing Director Husen Amru Mohamed Rashad has urged a shift from the current presidential system to a parliamentary system to promote good governance in the Maldives.

In a post on X, Amru emphasized that a government must listen to the people daily and remain accountable, rather than only during elections every five years.

He highlighted that a parliamentary system would prevent unlimited powers being concentrated in one individual and ensure that leaders who lose public support cannot remain in office, a feature he says is lacking under the current presidential system.

Amru added that over 17 years under the current constitution, the people have not received economic, social, or judicial justice. He stressed that changing to a parliamentary system is crucial to ensuring fair governance and addressing the needs of citizens.
