Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has stated that the Chagos sea dispute could have been pursued if former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration had not sent a letter to Mauritius.

Speaking in Parliament today in response to a question from Vilufushi Constituency MP Hassan Waheed, Dr. Khaleel said the letter resulted in the Maldives losing a significant area of sea.

He said the previous government’s communication to the international community indicated that the Maldives had no issues over certain disputed areas, which ultimately weakened the nation’s position.

Dr. Khaleel added that the current administration is reassessing the matter with assistance from international legal experts.
