Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has described the newly introduced Zakat Bill as a significant milestone in the Islamic history of the Maldives.

In a message shared on social media today, Dr. Shaheem said the legislation is aimed at strengthening the administrative system for collecting and distributing zakat, ensuring proper and transparent use of the Zakat Fund, and establishing a strong, modern framework for zakat management within the legal system.

He stated that the bill has been drafted in accordance with international standards, taking examples from countries such as Malaysia, Kuwait, the UAE, and Egypt, where zakat is regulated under the law. According to the minister, Shariah-compliant investments can also be made from the Zakat Fund, with the returns provided free of charge to eligible recipients.

Dr. Shaheem said the Zakat Fund will be developed in line with the times, circumstances, and needs, with the goal of eradicating poverty and fostering social prosperity in the Maldives.

The Zakat Bill was introduced to Parliament today, accepted, and forwarded to the Committee on Social Affairs for further discussions.
