An additional dredger has been deployed to speed up land reclamation at Rasmale', the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) announced.

The dredger has arrived in the Maldives, completed customs clearance, and is expected to begin work this week. China’s Harbor Engineering Company, awarded the contract earlier this month, is mobilizing the site and constructing a bond wall to start dredging.

The company plans to dredge 265 hectares at Rasmale' sites “C” and “E,” as part of the larger 1,153-hectare project. To date, 12.84 percent of the total land has been reclaimed.

Rasmale' is being developed as an environmentally friendly eco-city and is set to become the Indian Ocean’s first zero-carbon city. The project will include 65,000 housing units and feature an underwater tunnel connecting Rasmale' to Malay.

The government says the dredged land will be three times the size of Hhulhumale' Phase 1 and 2 combined.
