Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said the Maldives is “broken” and urged the public to stand up against what he described as government injustices.
Speaking at a PNF rally on Thursday night, Yameen said fishermen are among the hardest hit, noting they now earn MVR 14 per kilogram of fish compared to MVR 20–22 during his administration. He argued that with inflation and currency devaluation, fishermen should today be earning over MVR 30 per kilogram.
Yameen accused the government of reckless policies, corruption, and enriching only those in power while ordinary citizens suffer. He said the Maldives has fallen into “misery, slavery, and collapse,” warning that corruption is spreading like a plague across society.
The former president called on Maldivians to wake up and take a stand, saying the current situation has become unbearable for many.
