Former Vice President Dr. Mohammed Jameel has strongly criticized the government’s proposed bill to control and regulate the media in the Maldives, describing it as a major obstacle to press freedom.

Speaking at a PNF rally held at Artificial Beach on Thursday night, Jameel said the government intended to suppress free media and prevent journalists from carrying out their duties. He stressed that under a PNF government, the media would remain free, united, and independent.

Jameel noted that press freedom is a constitutional right brought by the people of the Maldives and not something that can be controlled by those in power. He added that the ruling party has failed to uphold the rule of law and accused President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of attempting to weaken democratic principles.

Emphasizing that the Maldives does not belong to any one leader or party, Jameel pledged he would not stand by while the government undermines the rights of the people or the independence of the media.
