President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has conferred the Presidential Honour for Distinguished Service to the Nation of Maldives upon the people of Utheemu, North Thiladhunmathi Atoll, in recognition of their centuries-long role in safeguarding Utheemu Ganduvaru, the ancestral home of Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu.

Utheemu Ganduvaru, revered as a symbol of Maldivian independence and culture, has been preserved by the island’s residents for nearly five centuries. Generations of Utheemu families have meticulously maintained the palace and surrounding relics, often without government assistance or compensation.

Traditionally, residents ensured the palace remained pristine by sifting sand for its interiors and maintaining clean coral grounds. Fishermen even avoided using the palace road to preserve its sanctity.

While recent years have seen greater state involvement in maintenance and renovation, the government acknowledged that the preservation of Utheemu Ganduvaru owes much to the enduring devotion of Utheemu’s people.
