Former STO Managing Director Hussain Amr has said that the Maldives has been heavily indebted over the past 1.5 years, and corruption and mismanagement have worsened the situation.
In a National Day message, Amr stressed that nationalism cannot be sustained with fireworks alone, calling instead for efforts to address pressing issues. He highlighted rising commodity prices, strained relations with businesses, and unprecedented levels of state theft as key concerns.
Amr further alleged that journalists have been silenced, justice denied, and independent institutions reduced to extensions of the President’s Office. He also accused ministries of being plagued by bribery and corruption.
He urged that the true spirit of National Day should be to work towards resolving these challenges and stabilizing the country.
