Velidhoo MP Mohamed Abbas has condemned the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill, saying it is designed to punish journalists and suppress independent media.
He warned that the legislation could allow the government to shut down outlets it disapproves of, potentially paving the way for a dictatorial system and covering up institutional misconduct.
The bill, moved by Thulhaadhoo MP, was debated in parliament as journalists protested outside the House of Representatives, expressing concern over threats to press freedom.
The Maldives Media Council (MMC) has also called for the bill’s rejection, arguing it could undermine transparency, accountability, and journalistic independence. According to media advocates, the law may impose legal and financial pressures on media outlets reporting on sensitive issues, limiting investigative journalism and public scrutiny.
As debates continue, media advocates and lawmakers urge revisions to protect journalists’ rights while maintaining professional standards.
