President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed today that his administration is “100 percent pro-media” during a meeting with the Maldives Journalists Association to discuss concerns regarding the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill.
The hour-long meeting provided a platform for journalists to raise their concerns, which the President attentively considered.
According to the President’s Office, he emphasized that the government is fully supportive of the media and does not intend to interfere in media regulation or the appointment of members to regulatory bodies. The Office added that the government plans to propose amendments to address concerns raised in certain articles of the bill currently before Parliament.
The meeting comes after controversy yesterday when Parliament Majority Leader and PNC MP Falaah made remarks suggesting punitive measures against journalists. Following Falaah’s remarks, Sports Ministry Senior Political Director Ibrahim Saeed (Cade) was dismissed for speaking out against them.
