Attorney General Ahmed Usham has stated that he does not believe the government should withdraw the Media Regulation Bill, which was accepted by Parliament yesterday and forwarded to the Committee for review, amid protests from journalists.

Speaking at a press conference today, Usham explained that the main purpose of the bill is to merge the Media Council and the Broadcasting Commission. He added that documents from the Attorney General’s Office show that previous parliaments had attempted similar reforms, indicating this is part of a long-standing effort to streamline media oversight.

Usham noted that the office has studied the provisions of the bill, and based on previous work and suggestions from various stakeholders, it believes the legislation could be further studied and improved rather than withdrawn.

He also said he plans to meet with relevant authorities in the coming days to review the bill and make any necessary amendments, emphasizing that the government remains committed to balancing media freedom with effective regulation.
