Velidhoo MP Mohammed Abbas has said that presidents who violate the rights of the people will ultimately be held accountable by the people themselves.

Citing the political situation in the Maldives and the actions of the current government, Abbas stressed that the president is elected by the people, supported by state resources, and is fundamentally a servant of the people. He noted that leaders cannot demand respect if they fail to respect those they govern.

Abbas further highlighted that the Maldives is not a monarchy but a constitutional state operating under a three-power presidential system decided and accepted by its citizens.

His remarks come as the Media Bill is under parliamentary debate.
