President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Government will introduce a National Engineers’ Award from 2026 to recognise the invaluable contributions of engineers to the nation’s development.
The announcement was made during the inaugural National Engineers’ Day, celebrated for the first time in the Maldives. The President extended his appreciation to engineers working across various sectors and formally declared 30th August as “Maldives Engineers’ Day”, to be observed annually. The date was chosen to mark the inauguration of the Sinamalé Bridge, the country’s largest infrastructure project.
Reflecting on the bridge’s transformative impact over the past seven years on Maldivian society and economy, President Muizzu emphasised the pivotal role of engineers in realising the Government’s vision of a developed Maldives by 2040, promoting digitalisation, and achieving renewable energy targets.
He further reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to expanding opportunities for academic research, education, and professional training in engineering fields, alongside recognition through the upcoming National Engineers’ Award.
Concluding his address, President Muizzu praised the ingenuity and innovation of Maldivian ancestors, noting that today’s engineers continue this legacy by driving national progress, and offered a prayer for a golden era of prosperity for the Maldives.
