Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that every citizen in the Maldives is worried about the state of the country under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, which has now been in office for one year and ten months.
Speaking at the 26th sitting of the fourth session of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National Assembly on Monday night, Solih said the people are struggling as electricity tariffs and commodity prices continue to rise, forcing families to work day and night to make ends meet.
He noted that global prices of oil and commodities have not increased, but in the Maldives, prices have doubled or tripled in the past 1.5 years. Solih also accused the government of halting housing projects initiated by the previous MDP administration and instead pursuing what he described as futile projects aimed at showing arrogance.
The former president further criticized the government for undermining judicial independence, eroding public trust in the judiciary, and centralizing power at the expense of decentralization reforms. He said these actions have increased public concern and called on the MDP to take the lead in holding the government accountable.
