The government has no plans to block or regulate social media platforms, said PNC Parliamentary Group Deputy Leader and Baarashu Constituency MP Ibrahim Shuja on Saturday.
In a post on X, Shuja dismissed rumors that the ongoing parliamentary committee review of the Media Bill seeks to regulate platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and X. He added that amendments proposed by the Attorney General’s Office had already addressed the main concerns raised by journalists.
Shuja accused the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of spreading false claims to create unrest. He emphasized that Maldivian youth are more responsible and aware than the opposition assumes, and that they understand President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has no intention of restricting social media.
The Attorney General has also clarified that the Media Bill will not apply to personal social media accounts.
