The Maldives Police Service has stated that the use of force to disperse the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest on Friday was carried out in accordance with established laws and regulations.
In a statement, police said protesters attempted to march through Majeedhee Magu in violation of an agreement made with the authorities. Despite being advised to continue the rally along the agreed route, participants allegedly ignored instructions, broke down barricades, and attempted to seize police shields, prompting officers to intervene.
Police said force was used “with patience and professionalism” and within the scope of the Police Service Act, the Rules on the Acquisition, Possession and Use of Weapons, and the Rules on the Exercise of Powers and Authorities granted to the Police.
Officers deployed a Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) to disperse the crowd gathered near the Artificial Beach area. While the MDP was permitted to continue its demonstration along Ameenee Magu and Boduthakurufaanu Magu, police prevented protesters from moving through Majeedhee Magu, leading to clashes between officers and demonstrators.
Eight individuals were arrested during the protest, and six have been remanded in custody for 15 days.
