Former Minister of Communication, Science and Technology and current People’s National Front (PNF) lead activist, Mohamed Maleeh Jamal, has said it is now evident why the government moved to restrict the media.

His remarks came after the government awarded MVR 658 million worth of projects to companies with interests connected to the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).

In a post on X, Maleeh said projects worth MVR 2.7 billion were awarded without a bidding process in a single day, adding that such actions are not acceptable in a democracy. He accused the government of continuous corruption, saying that it is now “stealing day and night.”

In a follow-up post, Maleeh said the reason behind the media lockdown has become clear, alleging that the government is misusing public funds without transparency. He said the budget is being spent without bidding and described the situation as cruel and unjust.
