President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said the government has implemented key measures to reduce uncertainty surrounding prolonged pre-trial detention.
The President made the remarks while meeting residents of Malé’s Maafannu district during a community consultation held at Thaajudheen School on Thursday evening.
He acknowledged public concerns and said the government has resolved issues that previously delayed court proceedings, including space constraints, while also ensuring financial independence for the judiciary. With these measures in place, he said, detainees are now promptly informed of their trial hearing schedules.
Responding to public calls for the swift release of detainees, President Muizzu highlighted data showing that 347 individuals are currently in prolonged pre-trial detention. This includes 117 suspects accused of child sexual abuse and 116 arrested in drug trafficking cases, along with individuals accused of terrorism, murder, assault, money laundering, prostitution, and other sexual offences. He questioned whether the public would support releasing suspects of such serious crimes without due judicial process.
President Muizzu reiterated that the government has guaranteed financial and administrative independence for the judiciary and stressed that his administration will not influence court rulings under any circumstances.
