The Rotary Club of Malé (RCM) has officially inaugurated and handed over the "Unmeedhy Classroom," a state-of-the-art special education facility at Dh. Kudahuvadhoo School. This milestone marks the culmination of a six-year journey dedicated to enhancing inclusive education and providing a dignified learning environment for children with special educational needs.
The project originated from a "Fannu Dhathuru" visit six years ago, where Rotary members identified a critical gap in resources and support for students with diverse learning requirements. Moved by the challenges faced by these children, the Club pledged to establish a structured and nurturing space. Today, with approximately 100 out of the school’s 850 students requiring specialized support, the opening of the Unmeedhy Classroom addresses a vital community need.
Beyond physical infrastructure, the initiative prioritized human capital. In 2025, the Rotary Club of Malé invested in a comprehensive teacher empowerment program, providing specialized training to 25 educators. Facilitated by experts from Malaysia, the training focused on inclusive teaching practices, significantly boosting the skills and confidence of local staff in managing complex learning profiles.
The project, valued at approximately MVR 500,000, was fueled by a robust partnership between the school, parents, and the wider community. Countless volunteer hours were dedicated to planning, fundraising, and implementation. The initiative also received significant backing from corporate partners, including Dhiraagu, Maldives Islamic Bank, Manta Airways, Timber House, Centurion, and Kandima Maldives.
During the handover ceremony, which was attended by District Governor Delvin Pereira, Club President Aishah A. Sattar emphasized the symbolic weight of the new facility. “It stands as a promise—a promise that these children matter, that their potential is recognized, and that their abilities will be nurtured with care, dignity, and purpose,” she stated. The Rotary Club of Malé has committed to the long-term monitoring and support of the classroom to ensure its continued impact on the lives of Kudahuvadhoo’s students.
