The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid held a telephone call with the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, Professor Gamini Lakshman Peiris, today.

During the telephone call, Minister Shahid warmly congratulated Minister Peiris on his appointment as the new Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka.

The two Ministers reflected on the close historical relationship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka. The Ministers also shared views on key issues such as climate change, peace and security, and sustainable development, and explored new avenues to further strengthen the ties between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

The Ministers spoke on the current Covid-19 situation in their respective countries and expressed their concerns with regard to the situation of the countries in South Asia. The Ministers also discussed the measures being implemented to contain the spread of the pandemic and the importance of vaccination.

Thanking the Government of Sri Lanka for their support to his candidature as President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, Minister Shahid gave his assurance to continue to work closely with Sri Lanka at the UN to realize his vision for the Presidency of Hope, and other international fora.

Minister Shahid and Minister Peiris reaffirmed their commitment to further enhance and strengthen the cooperation between the Maldives and Sri Lanka bilaterally and in the multilateral sphere.
