Japan’s former Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida has won the governing party leadership election and is set to become the next prime minister.

He won a ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership race on Wednesday. Kishida defeated former defense and foreign minister Taro Kono, seen as an outspoken maverick, in a second-round run-off vote. Two female contenders, Sanae Takaichi, 60, and Seiko Noda, 61, dropped out after the first round.

As the new leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, Kishida is certain to be elected the next prime minister on Monday in parliament, where his party and coalition partner control the house.

The current Prime Minister Suga has said to be not seeking re-election after just one year in office.
