Speaking at the last press conference held by the Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC), Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali announced the decision to increase school hours in islands with no Covid-19 cases.
Dr. Aishath Ali stated that starting next week it has been decided to increase school hours in islands with no Covid-19 cases.
Due to covid-19, Maldives closed all the schools and continued classes through teleclass, online google classroom, and viber. But in the month of July, all the schools islands other than male’ city reopened and continued studies from grade 1 - 12 classes for four hours per session.
Considering the physical classes are far more beneficial to students than virtual classes, the opportunity will be open for islands in the atolls to increase school hours to five hours.
Dr. Aishath Ali said “We are now working on transitioning back from new normal to normal. As we take this path, we have decided to increase school hours in islands with no COVID infections.”
Furthermore, the Minister has said that the guidelines set for the schools have been showing a positive impact and so far no cases involving the schools have come up.
She also ensured that although schools are closed temporarily in the greater Male’ area, there will not be a difference in covering of the content from schools in Islands and schools in greater Male’ area hence virtual classes will be continued to cover the content in the schools in greater Male’.
The Ministry has also decided to commence its classes in the greater Male’ area schools, for grade 9 and above from October 4th onwards.
