Maldives today confirms coronavirus omicron variant cases reported across the country.

Speaking at the Health Protection Agency (HPA) news briefing, Dr. Nazla Rafeeq said that along with new cases of Covid-19, additional cases of Omicron variant of Coronavirus have been reported across the Maldives. She also said to expect cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant to increase across the Maldives in the coming days.

“Most of the cases in the previous Delta wave were from the Male’ region. But this time around, we expect cases to increase across the Maldives,” she said.

She also said that so far a total of eight cases of the Omicron variant of Coronavirus has been reported from the Maldives. These include one case from Kudahuvadhoo Island, three cases from Maafushi Island, and four cases of Omicron variant of Coronavirus from the capital Male’ city.

Maldives first reported the new variant on November 27.

HPA reported 454 additional cases of Covid-19 on Monday, including 192 people infected in the greater Male’ area and 262 people outside the greater Male’ area. New restrictions were imposed following a surge in daily cases reported, and as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of Covid-19.
