Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, passed away aged 96.

Buckingham Palace had confirmed earlier on Thursday that Queen Elizabeth II had been under medical supervision after her doctors had become concerned about her health. Her family gathered at her Scottish estate after concerns grew about her health.

Later in the Afternoon, Buckingham Palace in a statement announced the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

With her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, automatically became king of the United Kingdom and the head of state of 14 other realms including Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

Queen Elizabeth II, the world’s oldest and longest-serving head of state, came to the throne following the death of her father King George VI on Feb. 6, 1952, when she was just 25. Her reign spanned 15 prime ministers starting with Winston Churchill, born in 1874, and including Liz Truss, born 101 years later in 1975, and appointed by the Queen earlier this week.

Queen Elizabeth II's tenure as head of state spanned post-war austerity, the transition from empire to Commonwealth, the end of the Cold War, and the UK's entry into - and withdrawal from - the European Union.
