The MDP Parliamentary Group Leader, and Hithadhoo North Constituency Member Mohammed Aslam, has said that the JP Leader Gasim Ibrahim is highly respected by the MDP.
Speaking on a state media programme, Aslam, who is also the majority leader of parliament, said the government has great respect for Gasim. Aslam was responding to a question about the recent rejection of important bills introduced by Gasim in the MDP-majority parliament.
Aslam said Gasim's amendment to the Constitution is an important amendment but the formula used to determine the number of members is unclear. In addition, the Constitution should be amended after much consultation, he said.
Aslam highlighted that there was no question that Gasim was capable and the process of constitutional reform was also accelerated when he took over the presidency of the Special Assembly.
Aslam said Gasim is highly respected by the MDP but he questioned the amendment suggested on fixing the number of MP's to 87 MP's for the parliament. This is the total number of members in the current parliament, Aslam added.
He added that Gasim's amendment was a sudden amendment without much discussion, but the parties could work together to find a solution.
The amendment by Gasim was rejected by the Parliament members, but it was supported by the President Solih and former President and Speaker of the House, Mohamed Nasheed.
