At the recent parliamentary sitting, the Preliminary debate for the Parliamentary system bill was started.
The amendment to the constitution proposed by MP for Kaashidhoo Abdulla Jabir called to change the governing system of the Maldives to a Parliamentary system was proposed to the parliament on 14th October.
As per Mr. Jabir, although the 2007 public vote has decided on the governing system, the constitution does not clearly declare the system of governance. During the constitutional amendments brought in 2007, the public voted on the governance system, where a majority of who voted decided for a presidential system.
The parliament will continue to debate on whether or not to accept the bills, and, if the bills go through, they will be forwarded to the relevant committee for evaluations, after which a final vote for it, will be asked.
