Religious scholar Sheikh Ali Zaid has stated that the way to put an end to serious crimes such as murder is the Islamic ruling of retributive justice, qisas.

Sheikh Zaid said he was shocked to hear about the merciless murder of an elderly woman in N. Manadhoo. Zaid said that killing any person unjustly is like killing all of mankind, referring to verse 32 of the 5th Surah of the Holy Quran: "Whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind, and whoso saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind."

The Sheikh said that inhuman and cruel deaths would be permanently resolved only if the sentence of qisas was implemented in Maldives. The Islamic ruling of qisas is ordained in the Quran, in verse 178 of the second Surah: "O you who have believed, prescribed for you is legal retribution for those murdered."

Naeema Moosa, 62, of Annaarumaage, N. Manadhoo, was found dead in her home. Some media reports quoted some residents as saying that Naeema was stabbed to death in several parts of her body. A Police team is currently investigating the incident. Meanwhile the Island Council has banned people from entering and leaving the island without permission.
