On Saturday, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih spoke about the significance of the Addu City land expansion project, stating that it marks the first step in turning the city into a robust global hub. He reflected on the administration's long-standing aspiration to transform the area and emphasised that the commencement of the land expansion project is the beginning of this transformative journey.

President Solih spoke during his visit to Addu City, where he initiated the land reclamation project at the Hankede-Maradhoo intersection. The development of Addu City is a top priority for the administration, and they have allocated MVR1.5 billion to the reclamation project, which would add 190 hectares of land area to the city. Adding 42 hectares of land to Hulhumeedhoo Island would also cost MVR179 million.

During his address, the president underscored his government's initiatives to improve tourism in the area. He shared that the land reclamation and road construction projects are in sync with the integrated tourism project in Hankede.

The Maldives Fund Management Corporation is leading the development plan for Hankede, which will cover diverse tourism facilities catering to various sectors, such as integrated resorts, guesthouses, and hotels. According to the President, the project is still in its early stages, but upon completion, the city will accommodate 7,000 visitors. This development will increase tourism opportunities in the region.

During his visit to Addu City, President Solih confirmed his administration's continued commitment to carrying out development projects in line with the wishes of the people. One such initiative is the construction of a 67-kilometre road in the city, which has been revised to use asphalt instead of concrete, reflecting the administration's updated plan.

The Addu City area has significant potential to become the leading economic centre in the region, and President Solih's government is dedicated to delivering a range of initiatives that will transform the area. By creating new opportunities for residents and encouraging socioeconomic growth, the administration hopes to stimulate sustainable development across the region.

Accompanying the President on his visit to Addu City is a high-level government delegation. Their presence underlines the administration's determination to deliver the best possible outcomes for the people of Addu City and the region as a whole.
