Mohamed Nasheed (Mosta), MP for Nolhivaram Constituency has accused Speaker Mohamed Nasheed of breaking parliamentary rules and democratic traditions when conducting business in the People’s Majlis.

Mosta claims that Nasheed, until recently, the most powerful leader in his ruling MDP over the past seventeen years, has managed his own party the same way.

Speaking to Ras.mv in an exclusive interview on Friday, Mosta said that Nasheed has been acting as a dictator since he had become the Speaker in 2019.

Mosta thinks that the Secretary General and the Counsel General of the Majlis ignore their responsibilities when the Speaker continues disregarding parliamentary rules and traditions as they had been coerced.

He said that this opinion of him on the Speaker’s conduct is widely accepted within MDP’s parliamentary group.

Speaker Nasheed continues to be MDP’s President even though he is associated with a dozen or more former MPs who are forming a political party called The Democrats.

“Business in the Majlis is conducted against the rules (by the Speaker). Majlis is conducted in the same autocratic manner, Keneryge Nasheed (Speaker Nasheed) had managed MDP during the past seventeen years”, Mosta said.

Mosta told Ras.mv that he has never consented to Nasheed to conduct parliament business the way the latter manages MDP Rally House. He said that this was the main reason why he had signed to move a no-confidence motion against the Speaker that was backed by 54 MPs. The Secretariat of the Majlis had acknowledged officially receiving the no-confidence motion on Wednesday.

Mosta believes that if he were to decline signing for the motion, his own conscience would label him as a corrupt person.
