The People’s Majlis is led into the present stalemate to block oversight of the government, opposition parties argued yesterday in a press conference held in the parliament building.

MP Ali Azim, The Democrats – Medhu Henveiru Constituency, said that the deadlock was put in place by the government, blocking the opposition from holding the executive accountable.

Also, the government expects to hush the voice of the opposition by putting the House under lock and key, claimed Azim.

In negotiations held with opposition parties, ruling MDP demanded, 64 percentage-point representation of the party in all permanent committees of the Majlis as their numbers stand at 56 out of the total 87 sitting MPs, Azim told the news conference.

However, the opposition is yet to agree on the demand, said Azim.

“MDP wants 64 percent stake in the General Purpose Committee. We cannot agree on this”, said Azim.

Agreeing to the statements made by Azim, MP Ali Hussain, JP – Kendhoo Constituency, said in the news conference that “the government knowingly filed no-confidence motions against both the Speaker and his Deputy, simultaneously, to lead the House into deadlock”.

“Let them withdraw the no-confidence motion against the Speaker, keeping the motion against the Deputy. Or , let them withdraw the no-confidence motion against the Deputy Speaker, keeping the motion against the Speaker”, MP Ali proposed his solution to move beyond the deadlock.

Opposition MP Adam Shareef, PNC – Maduvvaree Constituency, in the news conference said that “it is against democratic traditions to compose Government Oversight Committee with ruling MDP’s majority in it”.

MP Adam condemned ruling MDP of not compromising on recomposition of permanent committees in their negotiations with the opposition parties.

The need for rearrangement of permanent committees contributed to the present deadlock, among others, when 12 MPs left ruling MDP following the expulsion of MP Ali Azim from the party in May.
