MP Ikram Hassan, Dhiggaru Constituency, has said that the ongoing stalemate of the People’s Majlis “cannot be broken with consultations”.

The parliamentary sittings have been deadlocked since no-confidence motions were filed from last month against the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker by ruling MDP.

Moreover, following the departure of 12 MPs from MDP, compositions of parliamentary committees have changed disabling the committees as well.

As the Majlis could not do meaningful business last week amid protests from opposition MPs, Thursday’s sitting was also concluded with the Chair’s statement that “consultations must be held among political parties to find a way forward”.

Speaking to PSM on Thursday, MP Ikram said that “consultations cannot break the deadlock”. However, he said that when MDP’s recently proposed reforms to parliamentary procedures are voted and passed the deadlock will disappear.
