The President of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, People’s Majlis, Mohamed Nasheed has said that he will depart from MDP after facilitating migration of all members from MDP’s roll to The Democrats.

The Democrats is completing all legal requirements to contest in the presidential election set for September 9, reports say.

Taking questions from the media yesterday at the Majlis building, Nasheed said that MDP will merge into The Democrats under his watch and that is the sole reason why he is still the President of MDP.

He said in the media briefing that the great migration will take place after September 9.

When he was asked if he would be contesting in the presidential race with endorsement from The Democrats, he declined to share his mind without ambiguity. However, he openly said that even though he is the President of MDP he is putting all his efforts to legally form The Democrats.
