Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Abdulla Shahid has stated that the next generation of women should be empowered and inspired to work in the diplomatic field. He made the statement while speaking at the commemorative event held to mark the International Women in Diplomacy Day.
At the ceremony, Minister Shahid spoke about the reasons why the Maldives took the initiative to pass the resolution to celebrate Women in Diplomatic Sector Day. The Minister also shared the Maldives's experience in empowering women in the diplomatic field and in Foreign Services.
Speaking further, Minister highlighted on the importance of having female representation in leadership roles and urged to increase the current rate of progress to ensure it.
"At current rate of progress, it will take 140 years for women to achieve equal representation in leadership positions. I dont think women should have to wait that long to achieve something they deserve," said Minister Shahid.
"On this International Women in Diplomacy Day, let us recognise the past contributions, honour the current work, and inspire the next generation of women in diplomacy."
