President Nasheed has announced his departure from the MDP in a recent tweet. In the tweet, he made his resignation letter public.
In his letter to the MDP, President Nasheed said he does not think it is the best to stay in the MDP.
“I no longer believe that it is best to stay with the party, hence I hereby inform my resignation from the party," said Nasheed.
However during a press on Monday, Nasheed said he had no intention of leaving the party but rather wanted to “take it over”.
After losing the MDP presidential primary in January this year, President Nasheed has been working to form a separate faction within the MDP. Those who led that faction has been working on forming a new political party under the name of 'The Democrats'.
In his letter to the MDP, President Nasheed said he does not think it is the best to stay in the MDP.
