Jumhooree Party’s (JP’s) leader and presidential candidate Qasim Ibrahim has said that tenants living in state funded and built flats and apartments including those who are in Hiyaa Towers, Hulhumale’, will occupy the homes completely rent free if he is elected to office.

Qasim made the bold statement, speaking at the 158th Council Session of JP. Criticizing and addressing loopholes in public housing policies, Qasim said that all are not treated equally and well in the execution of the policies.

Further, Qasim said that all flats and apartments awarded to tenants under public housing schemes will be made rent free if he is elected to head the government.

“A group of people are required to pay for public homes. Others get them free of cost. Is this fair? Is this about doing good to people? In my government, all Hiyaa flats will be completely rent free. Not a bodulaari (equal to four laaris) will be collected in rent”, Qasim said in the council meeting expressing his thoughts on present public housing policies and his planned change to rules.

In addition, Qasim said that flats built for personnel in the security services (Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defence Force) will also be made rent-free.
