The 5MW solar power system installed on the Hulhumale' Link Road will start generating electricity in August, the Environment Ministry said.

The government signed a contract with Thailand-based Ensys Company Limited on November 24, 2020 to implement the project. Physical works on the project was officially inaugurated in December last year.

Through the project, 1,000 units of 5 MW solar PV has already been installed on selected Hulhumalé housing flat roofs. Currently electrical work inside those housing buildings are underway.

The Environment Ministry said that the rest of the solar panels are being installed and the system is preparing to start generating power in August. The Ministry also said it expects the installation of solar panels to be completed by next month.

As per the Ministry, 7.3 million power units will be generated annually through this system. It will cut down fuel costs by the state on electricity production by MVR 15 million to MVR 20 million.

The 5 MW solar PV system is financed by the World Bank under the Accelerating Sustainable Private Investment in Renewable Energy (ASPIRE) initiative project of the Ministry of Environment with the assistance of the World Bank.
