Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) collected Rufiyaa 48.1 million in zakat al mal (an Islamic levy on wealth), at the end of May this year.

This year’s total figure for the first five months increased by Rufiyaa 11.4 million compared to the first five months of last year according to MIRA.

The total amount collected in the first five months of this year in zakat al mal was 48,129,659, said MIRA.

MIRA said that it collected a total of Rufiyaa 48, 109, 756 in Maldivian currency and Rufiyaa 19,903 in US dollars during the period.

MIRA says that zakat al mal collection for April this year was significantly higher than that of other months. During April MIRA received Rufiyaa 11.1 million in zakat al mal.

Last year MIRA was paid a total of Rufiyaa 92,120,926.52 in zakat al mal. The Nisab, the minimum amount that a Muslim must have before being obliged to pay zakat al mal, presently in Maldives is Rufiyaa 7,312.55.
