The Majority Leader of the People’s Majlis, MP Mohamed Aslam, MDP – North Hithadhoo Constituency, has condemned Speaker Mohamed Nasheed for disrespecting legislators’ time.

Disappointed by the adjournment of yesterday’s special sitting into its fourth minute, which was held during the current break of the Majlis that started at the end of the second session on June 23, MP Aslam - joined by his party’s parliamentary group, briefed the media at the parliament building not long after the conclusion of yesterday’s business by temporary Chair MP Hassan Afeef.

MP Aslam told reporters that legislators were invited to yesterday’s sitting that was held outside the normal business of the Majlis, almost at the last minute. He also said that business of the special sitting was concluded in breach of the standing orders of the Majlis.

Expressing dissatisfaction about the way Speaker Mohamed Nasheed ‘runs’ the Majlis, MP Aslam said, “don’t be a dictator, resign and give way so that the Majlis can conduct its business. (Nasheed) is breaking the democratic traditions, solely to retain his position of honor”.

Yesterday’s sitting was concluded without any meaningful business, with the temporary chair’s announcement that “the report on the reconstitution of permanent committees needed amendment” for the special sitting to continue as requested on June 22 by MDP.

Starting yesterday’s sitting MP Afeef announced that following the recent departures of Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and MP Ahmed Rasheed, Central Hithadhoo Constituency, from ruling MDP, the composition of the permanent committees of the Majlis changed.

Afeef concluded the sitting saying that the change to permanent committees should be communicated to MPs and “they will be allowed to make proposals on reconstitution of the committees”.

Majlis experienced weeks-long stalemate before going into a mandatory break at the end of its second session in late June.

The cause for the stalemate was a no-confidence filing match fought between the collective opposition and the ruling party.
The no-confidence filing match was kicked off by the opposition by filing motions against the attorney general and the foreign minister. Subsequently the ruling party MPs filed motions against the speaker and the deputy speaker.
