Maldivian High Court has scheduled to hear on Wednesday an appeal filed by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom who is serving an eleven-year sentence in prison after the Criminal Court found him guilty for accepting bribes and laundering the money.

The Criminal Court sent President Yameen to jail on 25 December 2022 after finding him guilty for accepting money in leasing of Aarah in Vaavu Atoll - a state-owned island, and subsequently laundering the money he received from the corruption.

President Yameen’s team of attorneys said that “they will request release for him on bail and ask the High Court’s bench to expedite the appeal’s proceedings as opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) had endorsed him to run in this year’s presidential race that starts on 9 September”.

In a separate case in 2019, Yameen was sentenced to prison for five years and asked to pay a fine of US dollars five million. This sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2021 setting President Yameen free.

There is an ongoing case against President Yameen at the Criminal Court for accepting money in leasing state-owned Fuggiri island in Raa Atoll. Last month, the court set the dates for Fuggiri case hearings for this month.
