Reeko Moosa, former Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and former Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis, claims that “The Democrats can never be a worthy challenge to MDP” in the domestic political domain.

On Tuesday, speaking to a live program on a local internet-media outlet, Moosa said that MDP does not count The Democrats (TD) as a worthy contender that can create cracks in the party’s dominance that presently reaches all parts of the nation as the presidential election is approaching.

He said that all other political parties, except Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), are irrelevant in posing any meaningful challenge to MDP in the election that is speedily closing in.

He attacked former MDP heavyweights who left the party to make The Democrats, ambiguously saying that “they cannot revive The MDP Thought”.

The political movement that preceded the making of The Democrats was named and initiated by the then President of MDP Mohamed Nasheed and was called “Fikuregge Dhirun (Revival of a Thought)”.
