The Government of the Maldives has welcomed the decision of the European Union to deploy an EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) to Maldives to observe the upcoming Presidential Elections.

The EU has decided to join the Presidential Elections as an observer, following an invitation by the Elections Commission of Maldives.

In a statement welcoming the EU's decision, the Government stated that the EU remained a steadfast ally to the Maldives in its efforts to consolidate democracy and strengthen good governance.

"The deployment of an EU Election Observation Mission to the Maldives demonstrates the EU’s commitment to support the efforts of democracy consolidation and upholding rule of law in the Maldives," read the statement.

The Government reassured on a free, fair and credible elections as the cornerstone of our democracy and is essential for the continuity of our nation’s growth, stability and prosperity.

The Presidential Elections of the Maldives is scheduled for 9 September this year.
