Islamic scholar Sheikh Ali Zaid finds the ideology of The Democrats – the most recently registered political party in the country, formed by close friends and relatives of the Speaker of the People’s Majlis Mohamed Nasheed, in conflict with the social fabric of the Maldivian society.

The value system in Maldives corresponds to the principles of Islam derived from the sacred revelations of the religion.

The youthful Sheikh, who’s admired by many, is thought to be directing his criticism in a tweet, against Maldivian National Party (MNP) and Jumhooree Party (JP) for both are presently in talks with The Democrats (TD).

Western liberal ideologies fuel The Democrats, tweeted Sheikh Zaid yesterday. Consultations (probably referring to the three-party talks held yesterday) with The Democrats will do no good in governance, defending the sovereignty of the country, or policy formulation in the Maldives, says the Sheikh.

TD, JP, and MNP agreed yesterday to field a joint candidate in the September presidential election.

Their decision was shared with the main opposition PPM-PNC Coalition on the same day, requesting them to agree on a "joint candidate for the presidential vote".

PPM-PNC hold their position of fielding former President Abdulla Yameen as the joint candidate of the opposition.

President Yameen is presently serving an eleven-year prison sentence in Maafushi Jail.
