The main opposition PPM-PNC Coalition is gearing up to submit the presidential candidacy documents of former President Abdulla Yameen at the Elections Commission of the Maldives (EC).

The Elections Commission of Maldives tweeted yesterday, “We will be accepting documents of candidates contesting in the September 9 presidential election starting at 0900 hours on July 23 and ending at 1400 hours on August 7.”

PPM-PNC Coalition said on Saturday, “Work on preparing President Yameen’s documents is progressing and the media will be given an update about the specific date that we will submit the candidacy at EC.”

Even though PPM is unyielding about the party’s decision in fielding President Yameen in the presidential race, he is presently serving a lengthy prison sentence at Maafushi Penitentiary.

Legal experts believe that the only way EC could accept President Yameen’s candidacy for the election is the issuance of an order by the Supreme Court clearing legal uncertainties that presently surround the bid.

In the second week of this month, Fuwad Thowfeek, the Chairman of the Elections Commission of Maldives, advised PPM to free President Yameen for EC to accept the latter’s candidacy.

So far, five candidates have expressed their interest in contesting in the presidential race on September 9.

They are Maldivian Democratic Party’s nominee President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the President of Maldives National Party, MP Mohamed Nazim, Jumhooree Party’s leader, MP Qasim Ibrahim, PPM-PNC Coalition’s nominee former President Abdulla Yameen, and independent candidate former Minister of Home Affairs under President Yameen, Umar Naseer.

President Nasheed’s “The Democrats” might also field a candidate in the race if previous talks with other parties fail in fielding a joint candidate.

MP Qasim, MP Nazim, and President Nasheed recently decided to field a joint candidate in the election if PPM agreed to their offer.
